In the reference of the Orren-Kai Line, she is ninety-six winters old, a timeless bridge between the living and the ancestors. When her work demands it, the world moves with her, and time itself bends to allow her the space to complete her tasks.

Kinship is a choice, not a birthright. Accompanied by her best friends Todd and Charles, Anna must navigate a world where family is "claimed" through love and care rather than blood. As they flee toward the port city of Eberhard, pursued by hunters seeking the girl in the "marked coat," Anna's friends transform into her last line of defense, willing to bleed for a belief they are only beginning to understand.
