Con su casa hipotecada, pasa las noches en las bancas del Parque Forestal en el centro de Santiago. Está separado de su esposa debido a la falta de comunicación y problemas económicos. Vive un tóxico romance con una prostituta y tiene como único amigo a un tipo oportunista y escalador social. Este antihéroe urbano nos lleva a ver la vida y los procesos sociales de su época (o cualquier época), que son exactamente los tres años finales de la cruenta dictadura militar y civil del General Augusto Pinochet en Chile, a través de sus ojos vidriosos de sabio ignorante, que no pierde el humor ante el fatalismo y que nunca se rinde. Su brutal ingenuidad y frecuente estado de intemperancia, sumado al abuso de ciertas substancias y otras transgresiones, son su particular y a ratos heroica forma de sobrevivir a todo lo que la vida y la sociedad ponen en su camino. De esa manera toca con desgarradora fuerza la sensibilidad de los lectores.Con inteligencia en el guion y una estética del feísmo y la precariedad, que le ha valido el calificativo de "perfecta novela realista" por parte de la crítica, el personaje de historietas de sátira social Checho López, nace con la legendaria revista underground Trauko Cómics Chile, en Abril de 1988. Creado, escrito y dibujado por Martín Ramírez, Checho López fue una presencia indispensable en 30 de los 36 números de la revista, con un total de 25 inolvidables historias, que leídas en forma cronológica funcionan como los capítulos de una completa novela gráfica y que en este libro han sido rescatadas del archivo del olvido, para ser compiladas, restauradas y publicadas nuevamente en este volumen de colección.

El historietista Martín Ramírez nació en Santiago de Chile en 1966. Creó, escribió y dibujó la saga de las hilarantes desventuras de Checho López, en las páginas de la revista independiente y contracultural "Trauko Cómics" a finales de la década de los ochentas. Después de tres años la revista debió cerrar y Checho López no ha vuelto a ser publicado desde entonces. Con Checho Lópe ganó un premio Trauko Mención Especial en el primer aniversario de la revista en 1989 y el Premio a la Mejor Historia Seriada en el Primer Salón del Cómics y la Ilustración en Valparaíso, Chile en 1991. En 2006 Checho López es inmortalizado en cerámica en el "Paseo de la Fama del Cómic Chileno" junto a 97 viñetas y cinco estatuas de personajes de historietas Chilenas, en el Parque del Cómic de San Miguel, que homenajea a los dibujantes y principales héroes del cómic Chileno, en el barrio El Llano, Santiago. En el año 2008, el escritor Chileno, profesor de literatura y crítico literario Álvaro Bisama incluye a Checho López en su libro "Cien Libros Chilenos" donde hace una selección y reseña de los cien libros de la historia literaria de Chile, que en su opinión y crítico análisis, mejor reflejan el alma de Chile. En el año 2010, la banda Chilena de música "ska" "Sonora de Llegar" lanza su disco "Fiesta Primate" donde la canción número seis, se llama "Checho López" y es un homenaje al personaje de historietas. Luego de graduarse como publicista, Martín trabajó por siete años en Chile como redactor creativo en varias agencias de publicidad, hasta que la multinacional J. Walter Thompson lo transfirió a Shanghái, China. Donde ha trabajado desde entonces como director creativo. En Asia también ha trabajado en Vietnam y Camboya. No ha vuelto a publicar cómics. Martín Ramírez también ha participado en exposiciones, eventos y publicaciones en Chile, Argentina y España.
