About The Book

Mit vorliegendem Werk wird erstmalig der Versuch unternommen, die gesamte Chemie der j'1-Dicarbonylverbindungen einheitlich und zu- sammenfassend darzustellen. Seit nahezu 25 Jahren in der pharmazeuti- schen Industrie als Synthetiker im chemisch-wissenschaftlichen Labora- torium tatig, hegte ich seit langem den Wunsch nach einer systematischen Darstellung dieser Korperklasse, deren eingehende Kenntnis ein unent- behrliches Riistzeug des Synthetikers darstellt. Den Grundstock des Werkes bildeten zunachst Ausarbeitungen iiber die Ergebnisse eigener Untersuchungen auf dem Gebiet der {3-Dicarbonylverbindungen, die dann systematisch zu einem Gesamtiiberblick erganzt wurden. Bei der Abfassung des 'Yerkes wurde vornehmlich darauf Bedacht genommen, die vielfaltigen Reaktionen der j'1-Dicarbonylverbindungen zu entwickeln und verstandlich zu machen aus den besonderen Verhalt- nissen heraus, die sich durch die 1,3-Stellung der Carbonylgruppen er- geben; es wurde daher stets versucht, zu deuten, u'arum eine Reaktion in der beschriebenen Weise ablauft, und nicht nur Eintritt und Ablauf einer Reaktion lediglich registriert. Ein solches tieferes Eindringen in den Mechanismus chemischen Reaktionsgeschehens ist aber erst moglich geworden durch Behandlung der Probleme nach den Lehren der modernen Elektronentheorie, insbesondere der Lehre von der J. lesomerie. Ich bin mir wohl bewuBt, daB manche, besonders altere Fachgenossen dieser modern en Betrachtungsweise mehr oder weniger skeptisch gegeniiber- stehen; wer es aber unternimmt, das vorliegende Werk zwar kritisch, aber vorurteilsfrei zu studieren, wird bald zur Erkenntnis kommen, daB WHELAND nicht unrecht hat, wenn er die Aufstellung und Entwicklung des Begriffs der Mesomerie als einen der bedeutendsten Fortschritte der organischen Chemie der letzten 25 Jahre bezeichnet.
