After his graduation he went directly to Newton Theological Institution, completing the full course. Among his classmates there were Dr. Luther G. Barrett, the president Of Jackson College, Jackson, Miss, and Dr. Alonzo Bunker, who also gave his life to missionary service.

Josiah Nelson Cushing (1840-1905), preserved many documents, extensive letter files, and an almost complete set of diaries. He wrote many descriptive articles for the American Baptist Missionary Magazine and for American religious journals. It is largely from these that materials for this account of his life have been drawn. Henry Melville King (1838–1919), was the son of Sam¬u¬el Hall King and Eli¬za Shaw, and hus¬band of Su¬san Ell¬en Fogg. He was ed¬u¬cat¬ed at Bow¬doin Col¬lege, Bruns¬wick, Maine (BA 1859, AM 1862) and the New¬ton The¬o¬lo¬gic¬al In¬sti¬tu¬tion (DD 1877). He was or¬dained a Bap¬tist min¬is¬ter in 1862, and taught He¬brew at the New¬ton The¬o¬lo¬gic¬al In¬sti¬tu¬tion (1862–63). He served pa¬stor¬ates at the Dud¬ley Street Church, Bos¬ton, Mas¬sa¬chu¬setts (1863–82); Em¬an¬u¬el Church, Al¬ba¬ny, New York (1882–91); and First Bap¬tist Church, Pro¬vi¬dence, Rhode Is¬land (1891–1906). They wrote many books which following given that; The Mes-si¬ah in the Psalms, 1889; Christ and Bud¬dha, with Jo¬si¬ah Nel¬son, 1907; Sir Hen¬ry Vane, Jr., Go¬ver¬nor of Mas¬sa¬chu¬setts and Friend of Ro¬ger Will¬iams and Rhode Is¬land; Thinking God’s Thoughts Af¬ter Him: A Re¬tired Man’s Me¬di¬ta¬tions etc.
