Jahrhunderts, genau im Jahre 2000, veröffentlicht Alexander Kluge seine "Chronik der Gefühle", ein über 2000seitiges Kompendium von Geschichten der Moderne. Sie enthält einen Rückblick auf die 4,2 Milliarden Jahre der Menschwerdung, auf die Entwicklung der menschlichen Zivilisation und ihre Organisation des Zusammenlebens. Gleichzeitig untersucht Kluge in literarischer Form die Gegenwart, die Moderne, ihre Ziele und ihre Verfehlungen. Daraus ergeben sich folgende Fragen: Was ist schiefgelaufen? Wer oder was ist schuld daran? Ist der Mensch dazu verdammt, in einer von Krieg und anderen Katastrophen beherrschten Welt zu leben? Gibt es Auswege? Diese Fragen weisen auf eine lange Tradition zurück. Der Begriff "Kultur" spielt eine entscheidende Rolle. An diesem Punkt setzt Georg Simmel in seinem 1911 erschienenen Aufsatz "Der Begriff und die Tragödie der Kultur" an und entwickelt seine Kulturtheorie, die Ausgangspunkt dieser Arbeit sein soll. Er beschreibt das tragische Spannungsverhältnis von Subjekt und Objekt, von Mensch und kulturellen Produkten, wodurch sich die moderne Fehlentwicklung ergibt. Simmel bildet mit seiner grundlegenden Analyse des Subjekt-Objekt Verhältnisses den Anfang der theoretischen Grundbestimmung dieser Arbeit. Daran knüpfen die Kulturtheorien von Adorno/Horkheimer und Habermas an, die für Alexander Kluge von entscheidender Bedeutung sind. Er selbst hat sich zusammen mit Oskar Negt in einer eigenen Theorie mit dem Thema auseinandergesetzt. Es ergeben sich Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der vier Kulturanalysen, die in ihren Grundzügen herausgearbeitet werden sollen.
