This book is the result of collective research carried out as part of an international project. It places the target audiences of 'mathematical journals' at the heart of its approach. Rather than limiting its investigations to the circulation of abstruse results among specialists, it aims to capture the social context of mathematics in all its diversity. The findings are based on an extensive corpus of 'mathematical journals' targeting various audiences, including specialists in mathematical disciplines, engineers, teachers, students, and amateurs. In terms of methodology, global and statistical approaches interact with case studies concerning specific journals, types of journals, disciplinary communities, editorial centres, and geographical or linguistic areas. Thus, alongside studies concerning France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, the work also covers relatively understudied areas such as Japan, Brazil and Russia. The decision to adopt a long timeframe (from the end of the seventeenth century to the Second World War) has enabled the multiple legacies that have shaped the editorial form of specialised 'mathematical journals' to be highlighted, while traditional historiography dates the origins of these journals back to the early nineteenth century.
