About The Book

Citizen Categories in the Danish Welfare State approaches the question of the political legitimacy of the welfare state from a new perspective. It argues that legitimation of the welfare state is inextricably linked to particular ideas about the nature of its citizens, encompassed in so-called 'citizen categories'. Offering the first major study of citizen categories, their origins and alterations over time and their role in shaping welfare policies and institutions, the volume helps us bridge the gap between our understanding of the historical development of the welfare state and the present political situation.

About The Author

PhD in history and Postdoc at the Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen. He is an expert on democracy in postwar Denmark and Europe. He has published articles on a variety of themes, including concepts of local democracy, the works of Theodor Geiger, Danish library history and Danish postwar democracy. As editor for Selskabet for Arbejderhistorie he has edited several books, including Arbejderbevægelsens Demokrati (2019) with Rasmus Knold Andersen. Dr. phil in history and Professor at the Saxo Institute, University of Copenhagen. Among his many publications are the two monographs The Sovereign Consumer: A New Intellectual History of Neoliberalism (Palgrave Macmillian, 2018) and History in the Plural: An Introduction to Reinhart Koselleck (Berghahn Books, 2012). Moreover, he has edited more than ten volumes in English and Danish. PhD in contemporary political history and Associate Professor at the Institute of History and Danish Centre for Welfare Studies, University of Southern Denmark. Her publications on welfare state history include the monopgraphs Fra lige muligheder til ret og pligt: Socialdemokratiets integrationspolitik (University Press of Southern Denmark, 2018), Indvandring i velfærdsstaten (Aarhus University press, 2018), book chapters (Dansk Velfærdshistorie vol. IV-VI) and edited books (Migrations and Welfare States: Policies, discourses and institutions, 2013).
