Clayhanger is a novel written by Arnold Bennett, first published in 1910. The story is set in the fictional town of Bursley, a small industrial town in the north of England, and follows the life of Edwin Clayhanger, a young man who is determined to make something of himself.Edwin is the son of a successful but overbearing father, Darius Clayhanger, who runs a printing business in the town. Despite his father's expectations, Edwin is more interested in literature and art than in running the family business. He falls in love with Hilda Lessways, a young woman from a lower social class who works at his father's printing shop.The novel explores the complex relationships between the characters, including Edwin's difficult relationship with his father, his love for Hilda, and his struggles to find his place in the world. As Edwin grows older, he becomes more disillusioned with his life and the limitations imposed upon him by his social class and upbringing.Clayhanger is a realistic portrayal of life in a small industrial town in the early 20th century, and explores themes such as social class, family relationships, love, and the struggle for self-discovery.
