Cependant, alors que les derni�res d�cennies du si�cle dernier ont montr� une tendance constante � la baisse de l'incidence des MCV chez les hommes, les femmes, au contraire, ont connu une augmentation de la morbidit� et de la mortalit� dues aux maladies coronariennes et aux complications de l'hypertension art�rielle. Il y a 10 ans d�j�, l'information suivante �tait publi�e dans le magazine TIME (2003, 11 ao�t, P. 45-51): "Tueur de femmes n 1. Non, pas le cancer du sein ! La premi�re cause de mortalit� des femmes est la maladie cardiovasculaire", mais des chercheurs am�ricains ont montr� que seule une femme sur quatre comprend qu'elle est plus dangereuse que le cancer. Dans 50 % des cas, une femme peut mourir de sa premi�re crise cardiaque (chez les hommes, ce chiffre atteint 30 %), et parmi les femmes qui survivent � la premi�re crise, 38 % meurent dans l'ann�e qui suit la crise cardiaque (jusqu'� 25 % chez les hommes), et 46 % des femmes deviennent handicap�es � cause d'une insuffisance cardiaque due � un infarctus du myocarde (le chiffre pour les hommes est de 22 %).
