Hypertension, also termed as high blood pressure, is a medical condition characterized by persistent elevation of blood pressure in the arteries. Hypertension that persists for a long-time is considered a major risk factor for heart failure, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, dementia and coronary artery disease, among others. Hypertensive crisis may also occur due to severely elevated blood pressure, which can cause damage to kidney, brain, heart and lungs.
