Les marchés financiers négocient essentiellement dans des zones sans tendance que les traders appellent des ranges, ou des marchés latéraux. Il apparaît dès lors qu'ils gagnent de l'argent lorsqu'un marché est en tendance tandis qu'il est préférable d'éviter les marchés sans tendance, dont les résultats ne sont guère inspirants.

En dépit de cette observation manifeste, la plupart des statégies de trading à court terme reposent sur ce modèle de suivi de tendance, pourtant manifestement complexe à mettre en oeuvre. La plupart des traders sont plus ou moins dans l'attente d'un plus grand mouvement. L'expérience démontre cependant que la négociation de mouvements ou de tendances est loin d'être chose aisée. Soit le trader identifie la tendance trop tardivement, soit le mouvement n'offre que peu d'oppirtunités d'entrée.

Cela dit, il existe un groupe spécialisé de traders qui ne se préoccupent pas des tendances. Ils font d'ailleurs l'exact opposé. Ils négocient lorsque le marché est en range. Ce livre décrit les méthodes et les tactiques de ces traders. Il ne s'agit pas ici d'identifier un range et d'en négocier la cassure: il s'agit de négocier le range lui-même.
