Using Your Head as Well as Your Heart to Raise School-Aged Children

This 4th edition of Common Sense Parenting(R) offers parents of children ages 6-16 a menu of proven techniques to use while facing family challenges: a teen who's defiant; siblings who constantly bicker; a child having trouble in school; and parents and kids who don't communicate or have fun together anymore.

Step-by-step strategies aid parents in building good family relationships, preventing and correcting misbehavior, using consequences to improve behavior, teaching self-control, and staying calm.

This updated edition shows parents how to approach discipline as positive teaching rather than punishment. As each new parenting technique is introduced, the authors explain each step, provide many clear examples, and give you an action plan for implementing it in your home. Also addressed are topics of special interest - how to deal with school problems, computer misuse, and Internet and social media dangers.

Ray Burke, Ph.D., a former employee of Boys Town, served in a variety of direct care, training, and administrative positions, including as assistant director of Education Services and national director of parent training programs and as Director of Program Evaluation for National Training . Burke has provided consultation to a variety of childcare and educational organizations, and has authored numerous professional and self-help books, manuals, videos; grant applications; and articles for professional publications. He also has taught a variety of university courses and seminars related to parenting and family development.

Ron Herron served as a Family Teacher for at-risk children, and was a former writer in the Boys Town Press Department.

Bridget Barnes, M.A., has over 30 years of experience as a Health and Human Services professional. Before coming to Boys Town, Bridget worked with at-risk and abused families while pursuing a degree in Family Science, and later earned her Master of Arts in Communications Training and Development. Bridget is the co-author of the two award winning Common Sense Parenting(R) books that have been translated into seven different languages and has been the content expert on numerous parenting products. As an experienced parenting expert and Director of Boys Town's Common Sense Parenting(R) program in Nebraska, Bridget is known for her skill in developing practical and effective parenting strategies. Bridget is well-respected public speaker, a wife, a mother and grandmother.
