Während im ländlichen Bereich durchaus noch ein direkter, nachbarschaftlicher Kontakt zwischen Landwirtschaft und Verbraucher vorhanden ist und vereinzelt ein "Ab-Hof"-Bezug von Lebensmitteln erfolgt, ist in urbanen Gebieten ein Direktbezug oft nicht mehr realisierbar. Um die urbane Nahversorgung mit Lebensmitteln, die unter nachhaltigen Gesichtspunkten erzeugt und gehandelt werden, zu gewährleisten, bedient sich die städtische Bevölkerung den Supermärkten und Bioläden. In einigen Städten wird auch die Zustellung von "Biokisten" bzw. "Abo-Kisten" angeboten. In konventionellen Erzeuger-Verbraucher-Systemen besteht das Problem, dass der Erzeuger nicht planen kann, wie viele seiner Produkte tatsächlich verkauft werden können. Der Verbraucher hat heute die Auswahl zwischen verschiedensten Bezugsquellen und kann täglich neu entscheiden, bei welcher Quelle er wie viel einkauft. Die Folge fehlender Planbarkeit beim Erzeuger und auch im Handel sind gro e Mengen an biologischem Abfall, in vielen Fällen auch noch genie bare Ware, die jedoch nicht mehr verkäuflich ist. Der Druck ständig volle Regale bieten zu müssen und optisch nicht mehr einwandfreie Ware, trotz Genussfähigkeit, nicht mehr anzubieten, verursacht zusätzlich gro e Mengen an Kosten, die indirekt der Verbraucher bezahlt und die Druck auf die Erzeugerpreise ausüben. Initiativen, welche zu verbindlichen Netzwerken zwischen Erzeugern und Verbrauchern führen, werden "Community-Supported-Agriculture" (CSA), "Soziale Landwirtschaft" (SoLaWi) oder "Gemeinsame Landwirtschaft" (GeLaWi) genannt.
