Su familia de origen había estado compuesta por cuatro hermanos y él era el que mejor se entendía con su padre viudo. A los dos los ligaban carreras afines, una trayectoria universitaria prestigiosa y una militancia política comprometida. Álvaro tenía las llaves del departamento céntrico de su padre a pedido de este, lo que le permitía llegar con frecuencia sin aviso, o quedarse a dormir en la Capital cuando las conversaciones entre ambos se extendían demasiado. Días después de haber encontrado en aquel departamento a su padre muerto por un disparo junto a una carta manuscrita en la que se disculpaba con los suyos por quitarse la vida, Álvaro empezó a experimentar un dolor de intensidad creciente en las articulaciones de ambas manos. Crispado se restregaba las manos sobre la cabeza,
reprochándose el no haber podido hacer nada para evitar el suicidio. Semanas más tarde le confirmaron el diagnóstico; según se le explicó, aquellos dolores articulares en las manos constituían el debut de una enfermedad autoinmune que se conoce como artritis reumatoidea. Si en la materialidad del cuerpo se pueden desarrollar fenómenos que remedan a las composiciones plásticas o poéticas en su propósito por alcanzar lo inefable, tiene que haber entonces otras "fuerzas", distintas de las cuatro a las que ya se ha hecho mención, que operen sobre el cuerpo de un ser humano en situación cualificando el desarrollo de distintos procesos; entre ellos el desarrollo de los procesos de carácter patológico.
