Paul Mather has been Professor of Geographical Information Science at the University of Nottingham since 1988. His main research interest is in the area of computational methods of analysis of spatial data, an area in which he has published extensively. This book is the outcome of many years' experience in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as of a long-standing interest in software and algorithm development. Professor Mather has received the Gold Medal of The Remote Sensing Society and the Back Award of the Royal Geographical Society in recognition of his contributions to remote sensing. He is currently Head of the School of Geography, University of Nottingham, and Honorary Vice-President of The Remote Sensing Society.
