Grund dafür ist nicht ein technischer Rückstand oder Geldmangel, sondern vielmehr die Skepsis gegenüber der Medialisierung im Primarbereich. Die Medien sind bei den Kindern heutzutage jedoch ein integraler Teil ihrer Sozialisation. Dies beweist beispielsweise die aktuelle KIM-Studie (Kindheit, Internet, Medien) von 2016, die eine Basisuntersuchung zum Medienumgang von sechs- bis 13-Jährigen durchführte. Bereits 48 Prozent der sechs- bis siebenjährigen nutzen den Computer, wobei der Anteil mit dem Alter stets wächst. Demnach liegt der Wert bei den zwölf- bis 13-Jährigen schon bei 98 Prozent. Nahezu alle der befragten Kinder verwenden den Computer hauptsächlich zu Hause, und nur zwei von fünf Nutzern geben an, ihn in der Schule zu gebrauchen. In der Schule wird der PC dann hauptsächlich in einem speziellen Unterricht für Computer eingesetzt (74%). Die Kinder benötigen jedoch einige Voraussetzungen und Grundfertigkeiten für eine subjektiv befriedigende rezeptive Nutzung des Mediums. Nicht zuletzt ist die Vermittlung solcher Kompetenzen Aufgabe der Schule. Insbesondere aus deutschdidaktischer Sicht lässt die Tatsache aufhorchen, dass schwächere Leser mehr Probleme haben, die Strukturen des Mediums zu erfassen als bessere Leser. Die Vernetzung vom Erwerb der Lesekompetenz und dem Erwerb der Medienkompetenz ist somit unumstritten. Daher sollten die Kinder bereits in der Grundschule mit dem Computer vertraut gemacht werden und diesen nicht nur separiert im PC-Unterricht verwenden.
