Confidence is a novel written by Henry James, first published in 1879. The story revolves around the life of a young American artist named Bernard Longueville, who travels to Europe to pursue his career. During his travels, he meets a beautiful and mysterious woman named Angela Vivian, who he becomes infatuated with. However, Bernard soon discovers that Angela is engaged to his friend, a wealthy American named Percy Beaumont.As the story progresses, Bernard becomes increasingly obsessed with Angela, and his feelings for her cause him to question his own morals and values. Meanwhile, Angela struggles with her own feelings for Bernard and her loyalty to Percy. The novel explores themes of love, jealousy, and the conflict between personal desire and societal expectations.Confidence is considered one of James' early works and is noted for its psychological depth and intricate character development.
