Ce livre est issu d'un travail de recherche doctorale ayant une approche informationnelle et communicationnelle de la lecture. D'un point de vue méthodologique, cette recherche repose sur un recueil de données de trois types: des entretiens, des récits d'expérience et des observations. La lecture est abordée d'un point de vue plus "général," comme expérience, comme pensée réceptive, ce qui a permis de réfléchir aux aspects d'intériorisation et d'extériorisation du mouvement perceptif. Les analyses conduisent à considérer le mouvement de lecture comme contraint par la place que l'individu occupe dans le collectif, c'est-à-dire par rapport à une "identité littératienne" plus ou moins stéréotypée. Enfin, ce travail revient sur la notion d'inscription comme matérialisation de la "trace." Le langage écrit est ainsi une formalisation particulière du langage, une forme de matérialité dans un contexte expérientiel appréhendable dans un espace et dans un temps défini. L'expérience est médiatisante, dans ce sens, la "littératie" est conçue comme une formalisation particulière du langage et la mémoire comme une transmission.
