About The Book

Soviet cinema was once a unique and self-contained school of film art in the world, occupying an important place in the history of world cinema with its distinct ideological depth, artistic sophistication, and popular appeal. However, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the film industry fell into a downturn due to the economic crisis during the transition from a planned economy to a market economy. After several rounds of reforms, it finally entered the track of a market economy and began a trend of steady development. Contemporary Russian Cinema examines the entire creative process and the ups and downs of Russian cinema from three perspectives: film industry, film production, and director studies. It explores the creative movements-auteur cinema and mass cinema; thematic concerns-rethinking the past and critiquing the present; and character archetypes-the returned war veteran and the "New Russian."
