Core Teaching Practices for Dance Education With HKPropel Access is a practical guide for dance educators that covers the basics of running a successful dance program and addressing challenges that are not always solvable by great lesson plans alone.

Teaching dance in a K-12 public school setting comes with its own unique dilemmas and opportunities. Core Teaching Practices for Dance Education is designed to support dance educators--whether they are first-year teachers looking for guidance on building a dance program or experienced teachers from the independent sector making the transition to a K-12 program.

Key features of the text include these:

  • Real-world examples of challenges faced by educators in the field
  • Printable and editable online resources designed to help implement teaching practices
  • Chapter-opening vignettes and chapter-ending summaries that help readers relate to the content

Author Emily Enloe has over a decade of experience in public education and offers valuable insights into the various aspects of becoming a successful dance educator. She covers issues, ideas, scenarios, and details that are often overlooked or oversimplified in teacher preparation programs.

The core practices are divided into five chapters, covering the dance space, the teacher, the dancers, the curriculum, and the performance. Turn to the advice of veteran educators and provide students with the best dance education possible with the help of Core Teaching Practices for Dance Education.

In addition, Dr. Enloe was the graduate mentor for the Dancers Connect program housed through the USC dance education program from 2010 through 2014. The Dancers Connect program was an undergraduate practicum experience for dance education undergraduates that provided free dance classes to middle and high school students in the Columbia community. Her work with this program earned Dr. Enloe the 2012 Elsa Posey Graduate Student Scholarship from the National Dance Education Organization (NDEO). In August 2013 she earned her MEd degree in early childhood education from University of South Carolina at Columbia, and she continues to present at workshops and both state and national conferences in addition to teaching. Dr. Enloe is also the past president for both South Carolina Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (SCAHPERD) and South Carolina Dance Association (SCDA). She currently serves as a lecturer in the master's program for dance education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Dr. Enloe graduated with her EdD degree in leadership from Charleston Southern University in May 2022. Her research interests include whole-child development (particularly of adolescents), pedagogy and curriculum, somatics-based dance approaches, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
