Diez días antes de quitarse la vida con cianuro en el Hospital de Clínicas de Buenos Aires, Horacio Quiroga le escribía, el 9 de febrero de 1937, a su amigo Ezequiel Martínez Estrada:


Querido Estrada: (...) veo que su ánimo corre parejo con el mío. Ando con una depresión muy fuerte, motivada por el atraso en mi precaria salud....


Así comienza la última carta Correspondencia con Horacio Quiroga, enviada por este unos días antes de su suicidio a Ezequiel Martínez Estrada. Desde su retiro en plena naturaleza en la Cuenca del Plata, Quiroga encontró en Estrada un confidente ―un hermano― con quien compartir y desahogarse.

Aquí aparecen cuestiones de índole práctico, cuitas sentimentales, agobio económico, reflexiones acerca de la música y la literatura... Todo ello va aflorando en unas misivas conmovedoras ―escritas entre el 19 de agosto de 1934 y el 9 de febrero de 1937.

Palpita en ellas la soledad, la estrecha economía, y las frustraciones de Quiroga durante los postreros años de su intensa vida. Antecede a las cartas un ensayo basado en las mismas. Su título, El hermano Quiroga, anuncia el retrato íntimo que hace Estrada de un ser humano esencial y descivilizado.

Con él sintió compartir


una hermandad de sangre, una afinidad espiritual y una identidad de ser y de destino como solo se conocen en mitos y leyendas.


Martínez Estrada fue su corresponsal más frecuente durante la última etapa de su vida. Testimonio de ello es esta Correspondencia con Horacio Quiroga.


No creo que en la vida de Quiroga, como tampoco en la mía, haya habido un ser que llenara (mejor dicho: colmara) la necesidad indiscutiblemente instintiva de estar con otro ser sin dejar de estar con uno mismo y solo.
