Country People In a small town in rural New York, in the wooded hills between Cooperstown and the Mohawk Valley, those who socialize can have no preferences. The poor mingle with the rich and educated. Laborers rub elbows with teachers. Drunks socialize with respectable residents, and sinners share their lives with churchgoers. These seven stories embody big themes in a small-town setting where a host of country characters carry out acts of love, devotion, jealousy, ambition, deceit and murder as their lives become intertwined. "Laura," the lead story, sets the tone for rural themes and country characters. F. Norton Hamilton, a Yale Ph.D., marries Laura, a beautiful young woman in a small town where he researches folk stories. He belittles the town people for their religion and their ignorance, and shows only slightly higher regard for his wife. As his marriage unravels, he becomes a character in a folk tale he studies. He commits a crime of passion that is concealed by the imagination and superstition of local people.Four Quarters Editor John J. Keenan wrote of "Laura," "The voice of the narrator is beautifully established and adds a great deal to the complexity and the subtlety of the story."The characters are unforgettable. Their actions range from noble to unpardonable.

About The Author

Larry Schnell is a writer and journalist living in Van Hornesville near Cooperstown, New York. His first published work, Laura, begins the stories set in rural Upstate New York. As a reporter for the Gainesville Sun and the Florida Times-Union in Florida, he covered business, politics, criminal justice, and higher education for eight years. He graduated from the State University of New York at Oneonta with bachelor's degree in English literature and from the University of Florida with a master's in mass communication. He has taught English, journalism and writing for several colleges and the University of Florida. A lifelong sailor and licensed boat captain, he has sailed in Florida, the East Coast, the Bahamas, and Lake Ontario in his sailboat Intrada, and has published articles in boating magazines about his sailing experiences.
