After receiving the gift of a simple camera at the age of eight, the author developed a passion for nature photography, which he pursued relentlessly throughout his working career and continuing into his retirement. This book presents a unique collection of over 1000 of his photographs, covering an exceptionally wide variety of wildlife ranging from small insects to elephants, obtained over a period of over 70 years, not only from Africa but various destinations in other parts of the world. This is accompanied by an informative text describing the author's experiences, interesting details of many of the subjects, and where and how they were photographed. It is indeed a celebration of the incredible diversity of life that awaits discovery by anyone who simply takes the trouble to observe the creatures and plants, large and small alike, that surround him or her. They will be richly rewarded.

Born in Kenya in 1938, the author received his secondary education in the United Kingdom at Blundell's School. He then attended Exeter University where he graduated with a BSc degree in Botany, Zoology and Geology. He subsequently worked in the field of agricultural entomology in Kenya, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and Honduras in Central America from 1959 to 1978 and then in academic entomology in South Africa at the Australian Dung Beetle Research Unit and Albany Museum until he retired in 1996. In 1987 he received a MSc degree with distinction from Rhodes University for his research conducted on wasps of the genus Ammophila, and was awarded the Bronze Medal and the Junior Captain Scott Medal of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science for Rhodes University. He has authored and co-authored several books, mostly entomological, and written numerous scientific articles in various entomological journals, international and South African. Many of his photographs have been published in various books, magazines and other media outlets.
