The Australians had last toured North America after their Ashes campaign of 1896. For the second time in three years they lost a match to the Gentlemen of Philadelphia by an innings
That was in no small part due to a young swing bowler, John Barton King, who was 22 years old when he had bowled Philadelphia to the last of those two first-class victories.
Twelve years was then, and still is, a long time for a fast bowler, but King was still going strong and was keen to test himself once again against an Australian XI.
