Augustus Somerville was born on 8th August, 1839 in England to Charlotte Bagot and Rev. Hon. William Somerville. He was a British author. He is the author of books such as Crime and Religious Beliefs in India, At Midnight Comes the Killer, The Passing of the Forest Gods, Shikar Near Calcutta: With a Trip to the Sunderbunds, Strange Tales of Shikar, and Mysterious Crimes.This book illustrates the interesting features of crime in India and the bearing on the influence of religious beliefs and customs. It also is an account of crime and criminal methods. The chapters deal with prostitution, Devdasis, Dope traffic etc.
