Vor allem der Personalbereich eines jeden Unternehmens ist ein ma geblicher Kostenverursachungsfaktor, welcher jedoch nicht vollkommen ersetzt werden kann, da der Mensch einen entscheidenden Beitrag zur Erreichung von Unternehmenszielen leistet. Zur Optimierung des Personaleinsatzes und den daraus resultierenden Kosten ist es notwendig, neben organisatorischen Ma nahmen bezüglich Arbeitsmodalitäten auch die Bedürfnisse der Mitarbeiter zu betrachten, denn es ist empirisch belegt, dass die Arbeitszufriedenheit des Personals eine Korrelation mit dem Betriebserfolg aufweist. All diese Voraussetzungen führten dazu, dass innovative und strategisch bedeutsame Ma nahmen ergriffen werden mussten, die den Personalaufwand reduzieren, ohne aber Personal abzubauen. Mit dem Crowdsourcing wurde begonnen, weitgehend auf institutionale Personalbestände zu verzichten und stattdessen die Intelligenz einer Vielzahl von freiwilligen Arbeitskräften zu nutzen. Dies wird vor allem im Falle von schlecht automatisierbaren Aufgaben relevant, da der Faktor "Mensch" hier einen wichtigen Bestandteil zur qualitativ hochwertigen Aufgabenerfüllung leistet. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass immense Personalkosten eingespart werden können, geriet das Crowdsourcing in der Vergangenheit verstärkt in den Fokus der Diskussion über mögliche Ma nahmen zur Abwendung des globalen Wohlstandgefälles.
