Cuentos afrocubanos. Patakines es una antología de narraciones orales de origen africano, que han sido transcritas al español en los rituales religiosos de Cuba y el Caribe. Refieren el origen de las deidades de la religión yoruba y relatan además historias de esa cultura que suelen ser interpretadas en el marco del sistema adivinatorio de Ifá.

En el sincretismo cubano muchos de estos relatos han adoptado elementos de la religión cristiana o de mitos de carácter rural, asociados con otras culturas de la isla de Cuba.

Sin embargo, la principal fuente de estos textos es la cultura y la lengua yoruba.

Para esta edición de los Cuentos afrocubanos hemos ordenado los patakines de cada orisha (o santo) con el propósito de establecer sus múltiples variantes. Aunque algunos de ellos difieren en detalles muy pequeños y se repiten, consideramos que estas variaciones aportan elementos relevantes para la comprensión del corpus doctrinal y la cosmología afrocubana.

El orden que hemos dado a los relatos de estos Cuentos afrocubanos, no es el habitual. Los hemos dispuesto en la siguiente secuencia que sigue cronología de los mitos fundacionales de la cultura Yoruba:

En el principio de las cosas, cuando Oloddumare bajó al mundo, se hizo acompañar de su hijo Obatalá. Bajo el cielo sólo había agua. Oloddumare le entregó a Obatalá un puñado de tierra metido en un caracol y una gallina. Obatalá echó la tierra formando un montículo en medio del mar y la gallina se puso a escarbar la tierra esparciéndola y formando el mundo que conocemos.
