Nació con Galileo y Newton en el siglo XVII y se convirtió en un edificio físico-matemático imponente gracias a la reformulación de Lagrange y Hamilton en los siglos XVIII y XIX, cuando se la empezó a llamar "analítica". En el siglo XIX la Mecánica Estadística y el Electromagnetismo se construyeron sobre ella. Ya en el siglo XX, la nueva ciencia de la Mecánica Cuántica no relegó a la que empezó a llamarse "clásica" al baúl de los recuerdos. La Mecánica Clásica, en el siglo XXI, está tan viva como siempre porque hay muchísimos sistemas de interés cuya dinámica está adecuadamente descripta por ella. Más aún, las herramientas matemáticas y conceptos teóricos que llevaron a su sensacional éxito son un requisito para fundar sobre ellos el estudio de los sistemas cuánticos.

Este es un curso de Mecánica Clásica para estudiantes universitarios. Nació de la materia que el autor dictó durante años en el Instituto Balseiro (Universidad Nacional de Cuyo y Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica, Argentina), para alumnos de cuarto año de la Licenciatura en Física y las Ingenierías Nuclear y Mecánica. Si bien existen muchos textos de Mecánica, el estilo de estas notas de clase será particularmente atractivo para muchos estudiantes. Encontrarán numerosos ejemplos para motivar el material, y muchos cálculos hechos explícitamente como si fuera en el pizarrón, sin los atajos del tipo "después de un poco de álgebra", usuales en muchos tratados y libros de texto.
