This book traces an engagement between dance and the unced Aboriginal land it is danced on. By charting key moments over the life of the intercultural dance theatre company Marrugeku in Aboriginal communities in remote northern Australia, choreographic interactions between and across the multiple subject positions of artists of First Nation and settler descent are examined. The book uses the concept of listening to Country to examine how First Nation's ontologies bring ecological thought to dance through the entangled web of relationships activated in attachments to, and relating between, people, other species, political histories, and Country.

Through a close reading of rehearsal and performance of Marrugeku's productions Crying Baby (2000), Gudirr Gudirr (2013), and Cut the Sky (2015), the study reveals how new dramaturgies activated through intercultural choreographic transmissions in sites of contest, survival and renewal for Aboriginal Peoples, arise and mediate dance, culture and land as a mode of political power.

Rachael Swain is a settler director, dramaturg, and researcher of intercultural and trans-disciplinary dance and performance. She was born on the lands of the Ngāi Tahu in Aotearoa/New Zealand and works between the lands of the Gadigal in Sydney and the lands of the Yawuru in Broome, Australia. Rachael is co-artistic director of Marrugeku with Yawuru/Bardi dancer and choreographer Dalisa Pigram.
