About The Author

Novalis wird als Friedrich Freiherr von Hardenberg 1772 auf Schloß Oberwiederstett geboren. Nach dem Studium der Rechtswissenschaft wird Hardenberg nicht wie erwartet in den Staatsdienst übernommen, und beginnt 1797 ein zweites Studium an der Bergakademie in Freiberg. 1799 nimmt er die Tätigkeit in der Salinenverwaltung in Weißenfels auf. Die intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Philosophie und Literatur seiner Zeit sowie Begegnungen mit Schiller, Jean Paul und Goethe befördern sein Interesse an der Poesie und werden zum Ausgangspunkt seiner literarisch-philosophischen Produktion. 1798 erscheinen die ersten Fragmente mit dem Titel Blüthenstaub unter der erstmaligen Verwendung des Namens "Novalis" in der Zeitschrift Athenaeum der Frühromantiker Friedrich und August Wilhelm Schlegel. Seine zunehmende Kränklichkeit führt Novalis zur intensiveren Beschäftigung mit der Religion: Die Geistlichen Lieder, erstmals veröffentlicht im "Musenalmanach auf das Jahr 1802," werden Novalis' populärstes Werk. Sein unvollendet gebliebener Roman Heinrich von Ofterdingen gilt als Schlüsselwerk der Frühromantik. Der Versuch, eine Enzyklopädie sämtlicher Wissenschaften und Künste in einer Einheit des Wissens zusammenzustellen, zeichnet sich im Allgemeinen Brouillon ab. Die Sammlung bildet einen Höhepunkt frühromantischen Synthesestrebens auf dem Gebiet der Erkenntnis. Novalis stirbt 1801 in Weißenfels an der Schwindsucht.
