Neben einer oftmals verlängerten Schulzeit, hat in den letzten Jahren auch die Zahl der Studierenden enorm zugenommen. So hat sich diese in Deutschland in den letzten 17 Jahren um etwa ein Drittel erhöht. Darüber hinaus werden von Arbeitnehmern zu-nehmend mehr Qualifikationen gefordert, so dass viele Beschäftigte sich durch Fort- und Weiterbildungen an veränderte Arbeitsplatzanforderungen anpassen müssen. Dies verlangt für immer komplexer werdende gesellschaftliche und technologische Prozesse ein zum Verständnis weiterführendes Wissen, welches dafür erlernt werden muss. Lernen spielt in diesem Kontext somit eine au erordentlich wichtige Rolle. Vor allem ist es essenziell, zu wissen, wie neue Inhalte erlernt werden können. Das veranschaulicht auch folgendes Zitat des renommierten Gedächtnisforschers Robert A. Bjork: "In a rapidly changing and ever more complex world, the ultimate survival tool for individuals and organizations is knowing how to learn". Das Gedächtnis bildet die Voraussetzung für Lernprozesse, indem es Erfahrungen und Wissen speichert. Lernen und Gedächtnis gehören somit zusammen. Heutzutage gibt es so viele Gedächtnisstützen, dass eine Gedächtnisspeicherung nur manchmal nötig ist.
