Die berlieferung der Geschichten von Gilgamesch lassen sich bis in das 3. Jahrtausend vor Christus zur ckverfolgen. Die letzte bekannte Fassung wurde h chstwahrscheinlich vom Autor Sin-leqi-unnini im 11. Jahrhundert verfasst, der die alten Texte berarbeitete. Diese ist auch die am besten erhaltene Fassung und wurde in jungbabylonisch geschrieben. Die wichtigsten Textquellen zur Rekonstruktion des Epos wurden in der Bibliothek des Herrschers Assurbanipals in Ninive auf dem Gebiert des heutigen Iraks gefunden. Zu dieser Zeit wurden in Mesopotamien die Werke auf sonnengetrockneten oder gebrannten Tontafeln in Keilschrift festgehalten. Das Epos dreht sich um den Held und Herrscher Gilgamesch, der versucht die Grenzen seines Daseins zu berwinden und Unsterblichkeit zu erreichen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen der Mensch und sein Wesen. Die Rolle des Menschen in der Gesellschaft, sein Leiden, und der Tod werden thematisiert. Somit behandelt dieses Epos aktuelle menschliche Probleme in einem mehr als dreitausendj hrigem Gewand (vgl. Sallaberger, 2008, S. 7-9). Das Gilgamesch-Epos umfasst elf Tafeln und wurde durch eine zw lfte Tafel aus einer sumerischen Erz hlung erg nzt. Bis zum heutigen Tage ist die gesamte Geschichte nicht erschlossen und es wird davon ausgegangen, dass ein Drittel des Textes noch nicht entdeckt wurde. Folglich sind einige Handlungsabl ufe teilweise unbekannt und inhaltlich nicht nachvollziehbar (vgl. R llig, 2009, S.13). Eine Tontafel entspricht aus heutiger Sicht einem Kapitel.
