Mit der zunehmenden Durchdringung der Heilkunde mit naturwissenschaftlichen Denk-und Arbeitsmethoden konnte sich nicht nur das Wissen urn haufiger auftretende Erkrankungen standig mehr vertiefen, sondern muGten auch solehe Leiden zum Gegenstand von Forschung und Lehre werden, die infolge einer geringeren Morbiditat bis lang nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gelenkt hatten. Es gibt jedoch noch einen anderen Grund fur das intensive Studium dieser Erscheinungen an der Peripherie menschlichen Krankseins. In nicht wenigen Fallen soleh seltener Krankheiten bietet namlich die Natur eine ganz einmalige Moglichkeit, Lebensvorgange zu erforschen, die ansonsten nicht oder nur schwer zuganglich waren.
