Doch hat dieser "Altersknick", wie die Medizin ahnliche Erscheinungen zu nennen pflegt, seine Geschichte, welche sich bis in die Periode des ent- stehenden Interesses an naturwissenschaftlichen Dingen zuriickverfolgen laBt. Ein junger Oberlehrer am Stadtgymnasium zu Halle, Dr. GOTTFRIED RIEHM, in Leipzig von W. PFEFFER und LEUCKART biologisch geschult, hatte es vortrefflich verstanden, seinen Tertianern die Grundziige der Anatomie und Physiologie der Pflanzen nahezubringen. Spater auf der Universitat hatte der Ordinarius der Chemie JACOB VOLHARD seine Horer nachdriicklich ermahnt, ihr Studium auf eine moglichst breite Basis zu stellen und sich nicht friih zu spezialisieren. Seit den Tagen seiner Kindheit hatte er JUSTUS LIEBIG nahe gestanden, war sein Schiiler und Assistent gewesen und hatte ihn in der Sommer- vorlesung iiber organische Chemie jahrelang vertreten. Man verdankt ihm die Biographie seines Lehrers und vaterlichen Freundes. Es kann nicht Wunder nehmen, wenn die aus VOLHARDS Schule Hervorgegangenen nachhaltig fiir die Lebensbedingungen von Pflanze und Tier, fiir den Kreislauf des Stoffes in ihnen und fiir die groBen Zusammenhange in der Natur interessiert blieben.
