Dieser Band will diese Lücke schlie en und umfassend über das Mercuryprojekt informieren. Dieses Werk informiert umfassend über das Mercury Projekt. Beginnend von der Geschichte der bemannten Raumfahrt in den USA seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, über die durchgeführten Missionen bis hin zu einem Vergleich von Mercury mit dem aktuellen CCDev Programm wird ein Bogen geschlagen. Breiten Raum nimmt die technische Beschreibung des Raumschiffs und der beiden Trägerraketen Atlas und Redstone ein. Ein eigenes Kapitel erhielten die Astronauten, ihre Rekrutierung, das Training und ihr Lebenslauf nach Projektende und die errichtete Infrastruktur wie das Tracking-Netzwerk. Abgerundet wird das Buch über einen Vergleich des Mercuryprojektes mit dem gleichzeitig durchgeführten, rivalisierenden Wostokprogramm. 122 Abbildungen und Fotos dokumentieren Starts, Personen und informieren über den Aufbau des Raumfahrzeugs. Die wichtigsten technischen und historischen Daten finden sich in 47 Tabellen.

Bernd Leitenberger, Jahrgang 1965, ist von Beruf Lebensmittelchemiker und Softwaretechniker. Heute arbeitet er als freiberuflicher Softwareentwickler sowie als passionierter Autor. Seit seinem 15-ten Lebensjahr interessiert der Autor sich für Raumfahrt und Astronomie. Seine Website gehört zu den umfangreichsten und bekanntesten zum Bereich Raumfahrt im deutschsprachigen Raum. Artikel von ihm haben inzwischen Einzug in Lehrbücher und Fachzeitschriften gehalten. Seit 2008 erscheinen von Bernd Leitenberger beim Verlag BOD Bücher vorwiegend zum Thema Raumfahrt (Schwerpunkt Trägerraketen, Raumsonden, frühe bemannte Raumfahrtprojekte) und Lebensmittelchemie/Ernährungslehre.
