Biographieforschung lässt sich der qualitativen Forschungsrichtung zuordnen, die sich mit interpretativen Analysen autobiographischer Erzählungen beschäftigt. Die biographische Forschungsmethode erhält immer mehr Aktualität und Akzeptanz und zielt auf die Erlangung von Kenntnissen über die soziale Wirklichkeit mithilfe des Lebenslaufes ab. Die Biographie wird auf der Grundlage von Aufzeichnungen wie formellen Lebensläufen, Tagebüchern, Briefen, Memoiren, Berichten anderer Personen oder durch ein narratives Interview analysiert. Das Erlangen über die soziale Wirklichkeit spielt nicht nur für die Forschung eine wichtige Rolle, sondern auch für die Gesellschaft. Aus diesem Grund gliedert sich die Arbeit in drei Teile. Im ersten Teil der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das narrative Interview theoretische vorgestellt. Darauf aufbauend, stehen im zweiten Teil die Studie "Erzählbarkeit, biographische Notwendigkeit und soziale Funktion von Kriegserzählungen - Was wird gerne und leicht" (Rosenthal,1993) und die Fallanalyse "NS-Nachkommen im Spannungsfeld von Nichtwissen-Ahnen-Wissen" (Reiter, 2007) im Mittelpunkt. In beiden wissenschaftlichen Quellen gelang es den Autorinnen, mit Hilfe von narrativen Einzelinterviews, die soziale Wirklichkeit während und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieges zu skizzieren. Aus deren Ergebnissen lässt sich die Notwendigkeit der Biografieforschung ableiten, um die deutsche Geschichte aufzuarbeiten und kritisch zu hinterfragen. Den Schluss der Arbeit bildet der dritte Teil, das Fazit. Hier findet eine Zusammenfassung der Ergebnisse und eine kritische Würdigung des narrativen Interviews statt.
