In einem ersten Schritt wird auf den historischen Kontext eingegangen und das Patriarchat als Gesellschaftssystem im geschichtlichen Verlauf betrachtet. Im Anschluss daran werden verschiedene soziologische Konzepte diskutiert. Diese punktuellen, weitestgehend chronologischen Einblicke zeichnen die Theorieentwicklung rund um Geschlechterverhältnisse anhand von einzelnen Soziolog: innen und deren Thesen nach. Der Fokus liegt in diesem Abschnitt auf der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und dem 20. Jahrhunderts. Die einzelnen Kapitel der Theorieentwicklung sind nicht isoliert, sondern als aufeinander aufbauend, beziehungsweise als wechselseitig Bezug nehmend zu verstehen. Diese Arbeit wird von einem kritischen Ausblick abgerundet. Wo stehen wir im Jahr 2021 und was haben die Erkenntnisse der SoziologInnen in der Gesellschaft bewirkt? Wie verschiedene Theoretiker: innen herausarbeiteten, ging, beziehungsweise geht es im Patriarchat um die Monopolisierung von Machtpositionen und männliche Dominanz in allen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen. Allerdings werden diese Über- und Unterlegenheitsstrukturen bei und von Männern und Frauen reproduziert. Das Konzept des Patriarchats geriet in den 1980er Jahren gerade wegen dieser fehlenden Differenzierung in die Kritik. Mit der Diskussion dieser These wurde das Patriarchatskonzept schlie lich verworfen und in der geschlechtertheoretischen Gesellschaftsanalyse mit dem Begriff des Geschlechterverhältnis ersetzt.
