Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Philosophie - Philosophie der Antike, Note: 1,7, Universität Duisburg-Essen (Fachbereich 1 Philosophie), Veranstaltung: Seminar: Antiker Skeptizismus, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Phänomen im pyrrhonischen Skeptizismus wie er bei Sextus Empiricus in seinem "Grundriss der pyrrhonischen Skepsis" dargestellt wird. Dabei geht es besonders um die Frage, was die antiken Skeptiker unter Erscheinungen verstehen, wie sie in ihrem alltäglichen Leben damit umgehen und welche Auswirkungen dieses Verständnis auf die skeptische Philosophie hat. Konkreter ausgedrückt, geht es um diese Fragen: Wie stellt sich der Pyrrhoneer ein Leben nach Erscheinungen vor und ist solch ein Leben in der Praxis überhaupt möglich? Die antiken Skeptiker wurden schon zu Lebzeiten mit dem Einwand konfrontiert, dass ein Leben nach Erscheinungen nicht möglich sei. Man warf ihnen vor, mit ihrer Philosophie der Urteilsenthaltung, sich durch das alltägliche Leben selbst zu widersprechen, da man dort ohne Meinungen oder Urteile gar nicht auskommen kann. Dieses Problem wurde bis ins 20. Jahrhundert diskutiert, zuletzt besonders von Michael Frede und Myles Burnyeat, die bezeichnender Weise zu sehr unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen kamen. Frede ist der Auffassung, dass ein Skeptiker sehr wohl Überzeugungen und Meinungen haben darf und er durchaus ein ganz "normales" und zufriedenstellendes Leben führen kann, ohne seiner Philosophie zu widersprechen. Burnyeat hingegen hält es mit dem Einwand Humes, der besagt, ein Leben ohne Überzeugungen, nur nach Erscheinungen sei nicht möglich. Der Hauptunterschied liegt in der unterschiedlichen Auslegung der Begriffsdogma(Überzeugung, belief).Dies rührt daher, dass Sextus selbst einen weiteren von einem engeren Begriff von dogma unterscheidet.
