Mit dankenswerter Unterstützung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen bereiten seit einigen Jahren C. A. Willemsen (Bonn), Thea von der Lieck-Buyken (Köln), die Verfasserin der vorliegenden Abhand- lung, und der Unterzeichnete eine Neuausgabe der Konstitutionen von Melfi, des Gesetzeswerkes Friedrichs II. von Hohenstaufen (1231), vor. Nach Ermittlung der in den Archiven noch vorhandenen lateinischen und grie- chischen Handschriften durch C. A. Willemsen und deren Kollationierung erscheint nunmehr der Nachweis der den Konstitutionen zugrundeliegen- den Quellen, die Fertigstellung eines schon begonnenen Wörterbuches und der Versuch, einen authentischen Text festzulegen, als die nächste wichtige Aufgabe. Ein Schritt auf diesem Wege soll die vorliegende Abhandlung sein, die römische und byzantinische Quellen der Konstitutionen nachweist. Ergänzungen dieser Arbeit nach der Seite des germanischen und arabi- schen Rechtes sind in Vorbereitung bzw. in Aussicht genommen. Als Nebenfrucht der Editionsarbeit konnte der Unterzeichnete bereits im Jahre 1957 eine Studie über "Das Gottesurteil in den Konstitutionen von Melfi Friedrichs 11. von Hohenstaufen (1231)" veröffentlichen (Festschrift für Walter Schmidt-Rimpler, Karlsruhe 1957, S. 9-21). Herrn Kollegen Envin Seidl (Köln), dem das Manuskript im Auftrage der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Forschung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen zur Begutachtung vorgelegen hat, sei an dieser Stelle, zugleich im Namen der Verfasserin, herzlich für sein Interesse und seine Mitarbeit gedankt.
