Dabei soll mit besonderer Aufmerksamkeit untersucht werden, ob im Sinne der "Schreispirale" eine zunehmende Diffamierung von Flüchtlingen nachgewiesen werden kann. Im Rahmen der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit spielt hierbei auch die sogenannte "Schweigespirale" eine zu berücksichtigende Rolle. Die Schweigespirale bezeichnet eine Kommunikationstheorie im Hinblick auf die öffentliche Meinung. In diesem Kontext ergibt sich die forschungsleitende Fragestellung wie folgt: Inwieweit werden Flüchtlinge durch Kommentare des Spiegel Online, im Kontext zu Artikeln bezüglich der Flüchtlingskrise, unter Berücksichtigung der Schreispirale diffamiert? Im September 2017 ereignete sich in Deutschland die Bundestagswahl. Während des Wahlkampfes herrschte ein rauer Ton, denn es galt die Stimmen der deutschen Staatsbürger für sich zu gewinnen. Die Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) erkannte möglicherweise in der Flüchtlingskrise ein enormes Potenzial sich medienwirksam zu platzieren und entfachte eine kontrovers diskutierte Debatte, über die es sich zu sprechen lohnt. Die Ergebnisse des Wahltags verdeutlichen, dass diese rechtspopulistische Partei zunehmend Zuspruch erfährt. So konnte die Alternative für Deutschland einen Zuwachs von rund 10,5 Prozent der Wählerstimmen verzeichnen. Konnte die AfD Menschen motivieren kontroverse Themen öffentlich auszudiskutieren? Bei genauerer Betrachtung der sozialen Medien kann der Eindruck entstehen, dass sich Rezipienten vor allem durch Medienberichte über die Flüchtlingskrise motiviert fühlen, ihre zum Teil unangemessene und volksverhetzende Meinung kundzutun
