Bis zum Jahr 2000 wird der Anteil der uber 60jahrigen nochmals urn 30 Prozent und der der iiber 80jahrigen urn mehr als 60 Prozent zunehmen; die Gesamtbevolke- rung hingegen lediglich urn etwa 20 Prozent; was bedeutet, daB schlieBlich immer weniger Menschen die Altersversorgung von im- mer mehr Menschen sichern miissen. So sehr es sich eigentlich eriibrigen sollte, in diesem Vorwort de- mographische Veranderungen der Weltbevolkerung als Rechtferti- gung fur das wachsende Interesse an der Altersmedizin anzufiihren, so wenig laBt sich leugnen, daB es in erster Linie okonomische und soziale Probleme waren -und weiterhin sind -, die die offentliche Aufmerksamkeit und auch die Arzteschaft in zunehmendem MaBe auf Fragen des Alterns im allgemeinen und damit auf die Geriatrie, eine bis dahin weitgehend fehlende Disziplin, gelenkt haben.
