So hängt es beispielsweise davon ab, ob es sich um ein Kind oder einen Jugendlichen handelt, ob es ein Junge oder ein Mädchen ist, wo und wie er oder sie lebt, welche Vorerfahrungen gemacht wurden, welche Vorbilder es gibt, welche genetischen Voraussetzungen gegeben sind, usw. Die Ergebnisse, die in der Leseforschung veröffentlicht wurden, sind immer in Abhängigkeit von der jeweiligen Fragestellung zu betrachten. Daher kann es auch zu unterschiedlichen Ergebnissen bzw. Aussagen der einzelnen Autoren kommen. Gerade nach dem so genannten "PISA-Schock", der die schlechten Ergebnisse der deutschen Schüler bezeichnet, wurde der Ruf nach der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der Lesegewohnheiten von Kindern und Jugendlichen in Deutschland laut. Gemein haben die meisten Forschungsergebnisse jedoch, dass die Familie, die Schule und der Freundeskreis als drei bedeutende Instanzen der Lesesozialisation von Kindern und Jugendlichen betrachtet werden. Sie beeinflussen sich sowohl gegenseitig als auch das Individuum, das aufgrund seiner Biografie und der äu eren Einflüsse entweder zu einem Menschen wird, der gerne liest oder zu jemandem, der das Lesen aus verschiedensten Gründen ablehnt.
