Es gibt kein reines Wasser in der Natur. glticklicher- weise konnte man sagen, da (chemisch) reines Wasser geradezu giftig wirkt (S. 26). Man kann daher nur von technisch-reinem Wasser reden, d. h. ein Wasser ist rein, wenn es fiir den beabsichtigten Zweck geeignet ist. Bei der Besprechung von Brunnen- und Quellwasser musste betont werden, dass die Analyse eingesandter Proben ffir die Beurthellung eines Wassers werthlos ist (S. 12), da dieselbe n ur unter Beriicksichtigung der ortlichen Verhaltnisse durch sachverstandige Chemiker - nicht durch Aerzte - geschehen kann (S. 474). Stets erfordert die Probenahme grosse Vorsicht uncI Umsicht. Fast aIle bisher veroffentlichten Analysen von Kanalwasser geben kein zutreffendes Bild del' thatsachlichen Verhaltnisse, weil sie sich auf Einzelproben beziehen, die am Tage, wohl meist unter dem Einfluss del' sogen. FriihstiicksweIle, genommen sind, ohne Riicksicht auf die gewaltigen Schwankungen in del' Zusammen- setzung solcher Wasser (S. 109 u. 111). Dementsprechend sind auch die meisten del' bisher ver- offentlichten Analysen fUr die Beurtheilung del' Reinig-ungs- verfahren unbrauchbar, well sehr oft, in Folge unsachgemasser Probenahme, die Analysen des rohen und gereinigten Wassers gar nicht einander entsprechen. Dieses gilt zunachst fiir die Analysen, welche die Berieselung betreffen (S. 196 bis 230). Wegen del' starken Verdunstung miisste das Drainwasser wesentlich hOheren Chlorgehalt zeigen, als das zugefiihrte Kanalwasser - nur bei Regenwetter konnte das umgekehrte stattfinden -; dass die Analysen abel' im Drainwasser durchweg weniger Chlor enthalten, erklart sich daraus, dass das Kanalwasser abends und nachts meist sehr Vorwort.
