Eine Gesamtdarstellung der vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Kunst und Religion vom Spätmittelalter bis ins 18. Jahrhundert fehlt bisher. Das vorliegende Werk geht diesen Beziehungen in den Bereichen der bildenden Kunst, der Literatur und der Musik nach. Die Kunst dieses Zeitraums ist weitgehend religiös, genauer gesagt: christlich geprägt. Das gilt nicht nur für das Mittelalter, dessen scholastische Theologie ihren dichterischen Niederschlag in Dantes "Göttlicher Komödie" findet, sondern auch für die Renaissance. Die christliche Prägung betrifft Werke der bildenden Kunst, aber auch musikalische Kompositionen wie Messen, die entweder kirchliche Auftraggeber haben oder für Kirchen und kirchliche Einrichtungen in Auftrag gegeben werden.

Die Reformation bedeutet in dieser Hinsicht keinen grundlegenden Wandel, nur dass das Christliche jetzt konfessionelle Ausprägungen erhält, die sich auch in der Kunst manifestieren. Gerade in der bildenden Kunst wird der Bruch bemerkbar, den die Reformation religiös bedeutet. Denn deren Kritik richtet sich gegen Kultbilder und Bilderverehrung und kann sich bis zum Ikonoklasmus steigern. Während der Calvinismus die Bilder aus der Kirche vertreibt und die Malerei sich andere Felder suchen lässt, bedient sich der nachtridentinische Katholizismus je länger desto mehr der bildenden Kunst als eines religiösen Propagandamittels. Auch die verschiedenen Gattungen der Literatur, vom Gedicht, Epos und Roman bis hin zum Schauspiel, widmen sich nicht nur christlichen Themen, sondern treten vielfach in den Dienst der konfessionellen Apologetik und Polemik.

Und konfessionell geprägt ist schlie lich auch die kirchliche Musik, insofern sich mit der Reformation die einheitliche Form des Gottesdienstes auflöst. Neben die musikalische Gestaltung der tridentinischen Messe tritt jetzt im lutherischen Gottesdienst der Choral, im calvinistischen der Psalter. Die konfessionelle Prägung der europäischen Kunst bleibt bis ins 18. Jahrhundert erhalten und verliert erst mit der Aufklärung an Bedeutung. Wer einen allgemeinen Überblick über die unterschiedlichen Beziehungen zwischen Kunst und Religion vom Mittelalter bis zur Epoche des Barock gewinnen möchte, muss zu dem vorliegenden Werk greifen.
