About The Book

This books present papers on the archaeology of the region between the river Meuse and the city of Oss (Netherlands), locally known as the "Maaskant". The papers presented in this volume discuss the period from 3000 BC until 1500 AD. The wealth of archaeological data from this region indicated this part of the Netherlands was inhabited by early farmers already 5000 years ago. The strategic location near the river did not only provide fertile grounds but also formed an intersection in transport and communication routes.
De Maaskant ligt in het noordoosten van Noord-Brabant tussen de rivier de Maas en de stad Oss. Het gebied herbergt een groot aantal archeologische vindplaatsen die aantonen dat zich hier reeds vijfduizend jaar geleden boeren vestigden aan de oevers van de Maas. De rivier zorgde voor vruchtbare gronden en vormde een belangrijke transport- en communicatieroute. Tegelijkertijd vormde zij ook een gevaar. Bij hoogwater trad de rivier buiten haar oevers en overstroomden grote delen van het gebied. Daarbij verlegde de rivier regelmatig haar loop. Aan deze dynamiek komt pas een eind door de bedijking van de Maas aan het begin van de 14e eeuw.
De bewoningsgeschiedenis van de Maaskant tussen 3000 v. en 1500 n. Chr. vormt het onderwerp van deze bundel. In achtentwintig artikelen worden de resultaten van hoofdzakelijk recente opgravingen, veldverkenningen, booronderzoeken en amateurvondsten ontsloten en geanalyseerd. Een dergelijk regiogericht onderzoek vormt tegenwoordig een zeldzaamheid terwijl het noodzakelijk is voor een kwalitatief inzicht in het verleden. Het vormt ook de basis voor onderzoek naar de relaties met de nabijgelegen en archeologisch intensief onderzochte zandgronden rondom Oss.
Daarnaast worden met deze bundel de resultaten van archeologisch onderzoek in de Maaskant voor een breed publiek toegankelijk gemaakt. Kennisdeling is belangrijk en draagt bij aan het draagvlak voor behoud en toekomstig onderzoek van vindplaatsen in de archeologische schat-kamer Maaskant.

About The Author

Jansen, Richard: - Richard Jansen is fulltime lecturer in Applied Archaeology and European Prehistory at the Faculty of Archaeology, University of Leiden. Between 2008 and 2018 he also was the municipal-archaeologist of Oss. His (PhD-)research focuses on the long-term structuring of the (settlement) landscape from the late prehistory until the Roman Period, especially on the extensively researched sandy soils of Oss, but also within the larger MSD-region.
