Les conditionnels forment une part importante du questionnement de la logique sur elle-mème. A travers de nombreuses réflexions sur le conditionnel matériel, la logique cherche à penser l'implication logique telle qu'elle nous apparaît intuitivement, comme un enchaînement nécessaire entre un antécédent et un conséquent. Mais ce questionnement s'est accompagné sur un questionnement sur la possibilité de traiter les conditionnels ordinaires à l'aide du conditionnel matériel de la logique, ou des réformes qui en ont été proposées. Or, les conditionnels, que nous étudierons ici sous leur forme paradigmatique de phrases en si, se distinguent radicalement de ce conditionnel matériel. Nous avons donc voulu sortir l'analyse des phrases en si de cette tradition philosophico-logique pour analyser le sens de si dans une perspective clairement sémantique. Il s'en dégage une réelle unité, qui au travers d'une grande polysémie, permet d'envisager de façon unifiée des usages souvent traités séparément. Cette analyse permet également de revenir sur le débat en psychologie du raisonnement sur les connecteurs logiques.
