In der 2. Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts wurden in gro er Zahl Flugblätter publiziert, die das Auftreten sogenannter Wundergeburten verkündeten. Interpretiert als Zeichen des Zorns Gottes, waren diese Wundergeburten Bestandteil einer bis in die Antike zurückreichenden Vorzeichendeutung, die im 16. Jahrhundert vorrangig von Protestanten angewandt wurde.

Die Untersuchung deckt die theologischen Grundlagen für die Auslegbarkeit der Monstra insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der konfessionellen Streitigkeiten um den Wunderkult auf. Da es für die Gelehrten der Zeit eine Tatsache war, da sowohl die Ordnung der Natur als auch die der Gesellschaft von Gott vorbestimmt war, wurden die Monstra als göttliches 'Kommunikationsmittel' gesehen, um auf Mi stände in der Gesellschaft zu verweisen. Hierbei zeichnet sich im Laufe des Jahrhunderts eine Verschiebung in bezug auf die Adressatengruppen, die mit diesen Deutungen erreicht werden sollten, und damit der gesellschaftspolitischen Funktion der Monstra-Auslegungen ab. Im naturkundlichen Diskurs spielten die Flugblätter über die Wundergeburten als Anschauungsmaterial für Ärzte eine wichtige Rolle. Darüber hinaus bilden die Monstra den Schnittpunkt zwischen der von vielen Medizinern vertretenen aristokratischen Theorie von den natürlichen Ursachen der Mi bildungen und den die Prodigiendeutung formulierenden Theologen, die durch dieses naturkundliche Erklärungsmuster die Grundlage ihrer Deutung und die daraus ableitbaren Forderungen in Frage gestellt sahen. Der Frage, welche Bedeutung die Diskussion um das Entstehen der Monstra besonders für die Frauen der Zeit hatte, wird zum einen anhand der Imaginationstheorie und den daraus ableitbaren Verhaltensma regeln, zum anderen im Zusammenhang mit der Diskussion um die Macht der Hexen nachgegangen.
