Del arte de la guerra.La caída de la república de Florencia en 1512, con la instauración del gobierno autocrático de los Médicis, representó un duro golpe para el político y escritor florentino Nicolás Maquiavelo, que vio como de la noche a la mañana se esfumaban todos sus sueños, y en su vertiginosa caída perdía su empleo como secretario de la cancillería, luego apresado y torturado, para después sufrir el más ignominioso de los castigos: ser desterrado de Florencia, la ciudad de sus sueños y capital del Renacimiento.En aquel entonces la mayor parte de sus amigos le dieron la espalda, huyeron de su presencia como si fuese un animal infectado. Solo para apaciguar su lamentable estado recibió el auxilio familiar, lo que si bien aliviaba un poco sus miserias, lo hundía aún más en la desesperación al sentirse un hombre inútil y fracasado, obligado a vivir sin tener ánimo para hacerlo. Así, y peor, transcurrieron los años que siguieron a la fatídica caída de la RepúblicaTodo el odio hacia a la República recayó sobre él, al que achacaron todas las culpas, aunque él personalmente no era ni el mayor ni el menor culpable, incluso, el no ser un hombre corrupto lo sumergía aún en la mayor pobreza. Lejos quedaron sus grandes triunfos diplomáticos, aunque ni siquiera ostentaba el título de Embajador, pero era el que hacía y prestaba los grandes servicios que Florencia necesitaba para preservar su libertad, la paz, y no ser ultrajada y conquistada la ciudad.Ahora, siete años después y en parte recuperado de aquel trauma, se disponía a escribir una magna obra sobre el arte de la guerra, necesaria para los que abogaban por la unificación de Italia, en aquel momento compuesta por múltiples estados débiles y dispersos, y a merced de las guerras de rapiña de las potencias extranjeras, que campeaban libremente por la península expoliando a la población indefensa, saqueando ciudades, e hiriendo constantemente los sentimientos de libertad y soberanía de los que un día, en épocas lejanas, se consideraron los dueños del mundo.Con su libro "Del arte de la guerra" Maquiavelo no pretendía incentivar campañas militares ofensivas, invadir territorios o dar lecciones del arte castrense a generales ni soldados, sino enfocar este delicado asunto desde un punto de vista político y bajo el magno principio de que la mejor forma de mantener la paz y la soberanía de los pueblos es estar preparado para la guerra.
