Die Forschung in diesem Bereich ist viele Jahre davon ausgegangen, dass depressive Störungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter nicht existieren. Lange Zeit hat man geglaubt, dass Kinder und Jugendliche keine Depressionen haben könnten bzw. dass diese eine deutlich andere Symptomatik aufweisen würden als bei Erwachsenen. Erst in den späten 1970er Jahren fing man an, depressive Störungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter systematisch zu studieren und zu erforschen. Gegenwärtig, etwa drei ig Jahre später, wurden auf dem Gebiet zwar Fortschritte gemacht, doch steckt die Forschung gewisserma en noch immer in den Kinderschuhen. In dieser Arbeit soll es nun zuerst einmal darum gehen, das Wesen depressiver Störungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter näher zu bestimmen. Nachfolgend sollen dann unterschiedliche Erklärungsansätze zur Entstehung dieser Störung betrachtet werden, um abschlie end auf wirksame Interventions- und Präventionsma nahmen zu kommen.
