Seit dem Bestehen von marktwirtschaftlichen Systemen kam es in mehr oder weniger regelmä igen Abständen zu technisch-ökonomischen Basisinnovationen, die die "gesellschaftliche Befindlichkeit" (Neumann, 1990) nachhaltig beeinflusst haben und lang anhaltende wirtschaftliche Aufschwünge nach sich zogen. In den letzten 250 Jahren lassen sich nach Nefiodow (1996) fünf solche, nach dem russischen Ökonomen N. D. Kondratieff benannte "Kondratieff-Zyklen" feststellen. Der Einfluss technologischer Neuerungen ist aber auch offensichtlich, ohne weit in die Vergangenheit zu blicken. Allein die sukzessiven Verbesserungsinnovationen im IT - Bereich in den letzten 30 Jahren lassen einen die gro e Wirkung von Neuerungen spüren. Die Frage, wie es zu solchen Neuerungen kommt und unter welchen Bedingungen sie entstehen, wurde erstaunlicherweise lange Zeit nicht erfolgreich untersucht. Der technologische Fortschritt wurde als empirisch nicht erklärtes Residuum behandelt. Erst J.A. Schumpeter bemühte sich ernsthaft, dies zu beleuchten, und gilt deshalb als Vater der theoretischen wie empirischen Innovationsforschung. In seinem Spätwerk beschrieb Schumpeter (1942) den "Prozess schöpferischer Zerstörung". Hiernach zerstört der durch Innovationen vorangetriebene Wandel permanent bereits bestehende Strukturen und erschafft parallel neue Strukturen. Die Vorstellung eines solchen dynamischen strukturverändernden Wettbewerbsprozesses regt bis heute die Forschung auf diesem Gebiet an.
